We are about to embark on a busy week in year 2. We have got the last two days left to finish typing, editing and putting our books together to send off to the publishers by Wednesday evening. Wish us luck as we are all going to have to work hard to meet the deadline. Watch this space for more information of the release of our published books. You will be able to see these in Broadstone Library and we will be sending home a link where you can buy your very own copy to enjoy at home. There is no resting for us in the run up to Christmas after we have sent our books off to the publishers we will be given our next challenge. We have been asked by Mrs Stone, Mrs Collins and Reverend Canon Nigel to write the Christmas Story which will then be used as readings at the Carol Concert and also the script for the reception Nativity celebration. This is a real honour and we are very excited- so we better sharpen those pencils again…
Focus for English:
We will be focusing on writing in past tense as we retell the Christmas story. We will be including a range of sentence types (statements, questions, commands and exclamations) We will be using expanded noun phrases to describe and add detail to our stories. As these stories will be read out we will be ensuring we take great pride in our handwriting, joining each letter beautifully as well as ensuring we are consistently using capital letters and full stops.
Focus for Maths:
We have become addition and subtraction masters over the past few weeks and used a lot of resources to help us with this. Now that we feel a little more confident with this we are going to be tackling some problem solving. Where we will need to look closely at the symbol as we will be presented with a mixture of addition and subtraction maths stories. We will ‘prove it’ then move onto ‘apply its’ where we will be looking a real life word problems, true or false and missing numbers.
Here is a few for you to try at home…
True or False
6 + 5 + 3 = 15
36 + 19 = 58
11 + 12 = 23
99 – 9 = 90
Focus for character development:
We will be continuing to focus on our characteristic of responsibility as we meet our publishing deadline as well as begin our new challenge of writing the Christmas Story ready to perform at the carol concert- Can we meet all these deadlines?
We are also encouraging the children to take responsibility for their own learning, ensuring they have the correct resources to complete a task but also to ask for help or questions to clarify and move their learning on further.
How you can help at home this fortnight:
We are continuing to focus on joined up handwriting. We want the learners to be able to present their work beautifully with ease.
Continue to practice the common exception words in the middle of your reading log. Encourage your child to put these into a sentence using the correct punctuation and joining their handwriting.
Continue to use the links we suggested last time to practice adding and subtracting. Bring adding and subtracting into real life e.g. There was 6 sausages in the pack and we’ve eaten four how many are left?
We are also busy working on our 2,3,5,10 times tables. Practice these with your children in order e,g, 1x2 =2 2x2=4 but also mixed as well. We have included a link below to help
Things happening this fortnight:
Looking forward to seeing you at Consultation evening 7th December 2016.
